Q&A's

Q :
How long have you worked in the plastics industry?
A :

I have no direct experience in the plastics industry but I've been actively involved in the maintenance and management of moulding tools as part of my quality engineering role for nearly 6 years, happy to say that huge amount of my knowledge comes from Mr. Paul Rowe!

Q :
What sectors have you previously worked in?
A :

When I look back to my professional career, I'm happy to review the various industries when I've been able to improve the skills that have resulted in the professional I am today. As part of my studies as Mining Engineer I started as a Topographer Assistant and Shift Manager in open-pit and underground mining companies. Soon enough I ended up in Civil Works as a Production Manager for over 3 years until I discovered the "amazing world" of Quality. In this area I've been involved in the glass and steelworks industry until I moved into electro-mechanical and electronics. Seems like a long trip now since I made up my mind on what to do with my professional career.

Q :
What do you love about your job?
A :

The part of my job that hooked me to the Dark Side of Quality is the variety and scope of a normal day at work; that ability to see the business from a multi-faceted perspective is quite addictive and being able to interact with all the stakeholder in the process to obtain the common goal results in an unmatched sense of self-realisation at the end of the day.

Q :
What's your proudest achievement in your career so far?
A :

Without pretending to be petulant, the fact that Nordell has considered myself to grow the team and drive confidently into the future is a pretty big achievement

Q :
Describe a typical day for you?
A :

Although there's no such a thing as a normal day, I try to keep a structured routine to keep me ticking. I wake up at 0500 every morning and do some exercise, normally cycling in the woods. That boosts my whole body so I'm ready for anything to come. After all the "getting ready stuff" I drive down to work, check emails first thing and organise my day around new tasks and long-term activities. Evenings are also quite routine during the week, with 3 younglings running around the house and preparing for the next day. I'd need probably 15 pages to go into more depth but in summary I promise you I don't get bothered until my body falls in bed around 2300 every night.

Q :
What makes Nordell different?
A :

Nordell truly believes in its team and continues to invest in individuals to ensure we are well placed to deliver “what matters most” to our customers.
The Leadership Team has managed to facilitate all the right tools to keep people engaged and this was the final reason to make the move and join the company. I'm sure I'll be able to comment further on this point in the years to come.

Q :
Where are you from?
A :

I am originally from Ponferrada, an ancient town in the north of Spain... and remember, Spain is not all sunny weather; in my area we have snow around from October to February most of the time. You'll get to know the "other type of Spaniards" that don't like the sun too much and walks around in shorts even in December.

Q :
Tell us three interesting facts about you
A :

Let's give it a go, what can I consider interesting about myself... I love learning new things, especially new languages although I can only speak fluently Spanish, English and Galician; I'm quite confident in German and Portuguese and proudly able to read Cyrillic. I also have a really deep passion for rugby, I started playing at Uni in Spain and never stopped; from that I moved to coach and referee for my boys' team and occasionally I still get my boots on to release all the pressure from the week. And last but not least, I love cooking; we cook at home every day for both adults and children and passed that passion to my children. If you have any exotic recipe from anywhere in the world you are keen to share, don't doubt to pass it on, specially anything spicy...

Q :
What’s your favourite film?
A :

I have many films I like a lot like Godfather, LoTR, Braveheart, Rocky, Rambo or any other Sci-Fi type of movie but my favourite, no doubt is The Pursuit of Happiness starring Will Smith, once you get to know me better you'll understand why.

Q :
What’s your favourite thing you do to relax?
A :

Not really sure what relax means but when I want to slow down and have some me-time there's nothing like a good book married with a scotch. Falling into the pages of a good story can keep me at peace for a long time.

Q :
What's on your bucket list?
A :

There's not many things I haven't done in my life but certainly one I have my eyes on is skydiving, sure that soon I'll find a time to attempt it and feeling the adrenaline pumping up my whole body.

Q :
What’s the funniest thing that’s ever happened to you or do you have a funny life story to tell?
A :

Let's go for a funny one: I could select many others but this one has been always one of my favourites. At some point in 2004 I first visited Scotland, in my second night out I decided to try my language skills and ran to the bar and ordered 2 pints of Guinness. Innocent me, I stuck 2 fingers up in the "wrong" orientation; for me at that point it didn't mean anything so kept signalling on how many I wanted and then pointing to the Guinness tap... luckily, my mate came to the rescue and clarified the whole thing to me. Weird things that happen when you discover new cultures...

Q :
Who is your idol/hero?
A :

Although I follow some successful people mainly related to my professional life, if I had to consider someone a hero and someone that made an impact on who I am today, we'll be talking about my Great Grandmother, a very hard working woman that managed to remain strong and raise 3 generations of her family be active until her last days with 95 years on her.

Q :
What’s your favourite quote?
A :

One of my favourite quotes that interestingly comes from a very special movie is "Don't ever let someone tell you that you can't do something. Not even me. You got a dream, gotta protect it. When people can't do something themselves, they're gonna tell you that you can't do it. You want something, go get it. Period"

Q :
Tell us a little bit about the beard!
A :

I know you want to know about my furry face asset but there's not much about it. Since I remember having some sort of facial hair I've had some kind of styling in my face. With time I decided to let it grow (cue Frozen-type music) and has become part of the characteristics of The Oscar. Although my mum still threatens to shave it one night whenever she visits, I know that my daughter would protect it with her life as she loves cuddling on it until falling asleep. All the greys in there now came to life a 16th June around 10 years ago when my twin boys came to this world... rest of them will follow suit soon...
